41 years ago, on January 13, 1982 at 4:30P 🟠 New Carrollton Train 410 departed Federal Triangle and took an incorrectly aligned switch following single tracking. Without inspecting the train a supervisor began to operate the train back towards Federal Triangle resulting in the front half (operator cab end) of now last car (1029) following the inbound track while the rest of the train followed the switch to the outbound track. The tunnel wall impacted the left side of the car just in front of door 11 and crushed the car, and splitting the floor injuring 30 and fatally injuring 3 individuals sitting behind door 10. During the evacuation third rail power briefly came back on as the wreckage shifted. The evacuation took roughly 2 hours. Metro dismantled car 1029 at the site and repaired the tracks over the next 5 days. The mishap occurred 30 mins after Air Florida Flt 90 crashed into the inbound 14th St bridge and Potomac River.
